At Be Moore Interpreting, we realize that the art of interpreting is more than mere translation of words; it is about communicating meaning, intent, and cultural context. Our team of interpreters, based around the globe, works in diverse communities to ensure that each interaction is fully understood. We therefore foster contextual interpretation, encouraging our interpreters to apply the appropriate roles to any given situation.
Interpreting Beyond Words: Understanding the Roles
In educational settings, where we do much of our work, the role of an interpreter goes far beyond simple word-for-word translation. While being a Conduit is vital to the delivery of accurate communication, there is a time and a place for the interpreter to take on the roles of Clarifier, Cultural Broker, or Advocate to assure that the intent of the communication is clearly conveyed and understood by all parties in the communicative process.
Take a parent-teacher meeting, for example. The teacher might use some educational slang or some sort of terms that do not exist in the parent's native language. That's when our interpreters step in as Clarifiers to make sure that parent understands what is being discussed in terms of a child's academic or behavioral details. We encourage our interpreters to be proactive, pointing out such terms and remain neutral at the same time.
Cultural Understanding in the Classroom
Few environments are as culturally varied as education; many times, communication barriers go farther than language alone. This is where the role of a Cultural Broker becomes important. Our interpreters are trained in knowing those moments when some cultural norm or expectation could foster misunderstandings and how to bridge these gaps without changing the core message.
For example, one of our interpreters attended a school orientation for a student whose family came from a different cultural background, and thus was unfamiliar with some of the current American school policies. The interpreter recognized this and immediately began explaining the cultural context behind the policies to ensure the family felt informed and included.
Advocating for Equity and Language Justice
At Be Moore Interpreting, we wholeheartedly support language justice, believing that people should have the same access to communicate in any setting as other individuals, regardless of their home language. This means providing parents and students with the same opportunities for participation and success inside an educational environment.
Accordingly, when needed, our interpreters can don the hat of an Advocate, especially when language barriers pose risks of unequal education. We train interpreters to recognize these moments, so that each voice is heard in a manner that creates true equity.
Growing into New Fields
While much of our work is in the educational setting, we are excited to be expanding into medical interpretation as well. For those looking to expand their repertoire of skills, we offer 40-hour Bridging the Gap medical interpreter training that prepares interpreters for the unique demands within a medical field. This class provides the foundation necessary to navigate complex medical terminology and the role of an advocate for patients.
